Ingredients: Label says “dried sardines” but that’s obviously a mistranslation, these are Smoked sprats (Sprattus sprattus), refined olive oil, dried sliced carrot, chili pepper, jalapeno flavor, salt.
The Riga Gold Délicatesse line upgrades their basic smoked sprat from canola oil to olive oil. And this one adds chili pepper.

Beautiful fish, spicy fish. Was surprised at how much chili flavor & spice came through here, in a pleasant and not-too-much sort of way. The chili heat was a 2.5 out of 5, primarily hitting me in the back of the throat. Very very high medium-soft quality fish that held up nicely to chopsticks with very little breakage. The oil was clear, clean, packed with layered flavors that felt anything but one note … would have been absolutely bonkers to finish up with some crusty bread. Overall, this is the kind of tin that you can’t help but eat far too quickly, and you find yourself wanting another one immediately after the tin is gone.
Where does this place in the all-time spicy sardine rankings? Honestly, there are very few actually-spicy fish on my list that hold their own with these … if you like heat and love softer textures without mush, these very well could be your deserted island tin. I generally prefer firmer fish but these softer ones really do it for me in a special way. Easily a top 5 spicy sardine tin in my book, especially when factoring in this price!
