We’re big fans of garfish, here, and will often choose them over sardines when it’s time to put out some tins. We find the flavor cleaner and the texture more reliable than sardines. But what do we know? Better if you trust your own research.

Garfish. Needlefish. These are the skinny girls who made fun of their fat sardine friends. They’re lean, mean, and full of flavor. This tin was excellent. I tried a few on some crackers, some lettuce wrap, and a few right from the fork.
They were fantastic tasting, and reminded me of some of the cooked French sardines. Very dense, mild but present fish flavor… With these you can’t go wrong, so … Go getcha some!!

Impressive tin of garfish. I loved the firmness, texture, and flake that it presented without any dryness – and that’s a tricky line to walk. Moisture was probably as good as I’ve had in a garfish tin, and while it’s simply in olive oil, there was enough depth of flavor that I really didn’t feel like I needed to add any salt or additional seasoning to each bite. The density and texture would absolutely be amazing in a spiced version and hopefully they decide to make that some day.
This was every bit as good or better than other garfish I’ve tried (Conservas de Cambados, Ati Manel). Although I might ever-so-slightly lean to the Ati Manel spiced version as my overall favorite garfish, that’s more of a comment on the spiced flavor than anything else … all in all, this was an *excellent* first tin to try from the Paco Lafuente brand and I can’t wait to try their sardines and mussels next. Recommended.

This was a fabulous tin of garfish. Opening the lid I was presented with a mild olive oil aroma with a hint of the sea – this is a tin I wouldn’t be afraid to bring to the office. Had a total of five slender fish darts which I placed on sourdough toast drizzled with the creamy olive oil. The texture was very firm with no hint of dryness whatsoever. The seasoning was spot-on also, dare I say it could use a dash more salt.
All in all, definitely a tin to try if you’re a fan of garfish or are wondering how they are.

Some reviewers seem to regard garfish as the B-team alternative to A-team sardines. These are not subs for a very different fish. They are their own fishselves, & an independent delight. Firmer & skinnier than sardines, they have a very different mouth feel & a rare combination of robustness & delicacy. They appear to absorb less oil than sardines. I find them very filling; a can plus accompaniments serves 2 easily. The Paco Lafuente are a tad juicier than the Conservas de Cambados, but considerably more expensive, I might reserve the former for indulgent solo gourmandise & rely on the Conservas for convivial meals. But wait! there are more brands to try! Time to call in the SWAT (Sardines with a Troop) team!

It turns out I’m a garfish guy. I’d previously enjoyed the Ati Manel and Conservas de Cambados gar/needle-fish, but I’d not yet opened this can I presented all three–perhaps unfairly one of them was the Spicy Ati Manel–to a tableful of curious cousins, none of whom had previously tasted garfish and two of whom had never even had a canned sardine. All were very happy with this fish; a majority awarded 1st Place to Ati Manel–spice rules!–but all but one gave the Silver Medal to Paco LaFuente. Would that they’d roll out a spicy version.
