What distinguishes these Limited Edition Sardines from the standard sister-can? Well, the principal difference is the addition of Thyme, which is indeed a prominent flavor note. Are these perhaps slightly more lemony, too? I felt like they were, although I did not side-by-side them. Opportunity missed.
Otherwise, though, these seemed exactly the same as the Minervas with lemon I’ve had before. And that’s not entirely good, in my book. The were three big pilchards, whereas sometimes the standard can has four, slightly smaller ones. But the fish were entirely covered in their scales, as though no attempt whatsoever was made at scaling. I’d had high hopes that Special Edition meant “special loving care,” but it might just be the thyme leaves.
If you’re generally satisfied with Minerva sardines, you’ll like these, I’m betting. If you’re always on the lookout for new and different flavors, the lemon-thyme is something you ought to check out while you can.
