Boneless and skinless mackerel fillets are the most versatile of all the tinned fishes. Fight me.

WHOA. Ok, ok Mariscadora … I notice you. This is a darn near *spectacular* tin of mackerel in flavor, texture, moisture, and overall quality. Texturally, it’s a medium firm fish with pleasant density. This mackerel certainly has better-than-average moisture levels and flake when compared to other mackerel tins. No weird/spongy chew on this at all, and no hiccups! I ate this straight from the tin at room temp -because that’s the way I like to roll- and they really nailed the seasoning/salt levels. I had zero desire to add anything to it whatsoever but it certainly would be a great vehicle to anyone who is so inclined to be fancy. The oil was a noticeable and delicious component, and it seemed like they made a conscious decision for it to match the quality of the fish.
It’s my new favorite “plain” mackerel tin and easily ranks in my top 10 mackerel tins overall behind only a handful of tins (e.g. various Ocean’s offerings, KO medit, and Patagonia lemon caper). I was really shocked and impressed with this. Strong, STRONG recommendation for everyone to try this tin!

First time eating canned mackerel so I don’t have anything to compare it to. (I’ve had broiled mackerel prepared in a Japanese restaurant and enjoyed that.) The fish was firm but very flaky. Eating it on its own, I would describe it as good but on the bland side. I enjoyed it on a cracker with some mustard much better than straight out of the tin. The mustard added some needed flavor and the cracker provided some textural contrast. As it says in the RTG description, I think it would make a good sub for tuna in any dish. I’d like to try it again heated up, on rice, and with some Japanese seasonings – soy, sesame, maybe a touch of wasabi and/or pickled ginger. Come to think of it, I think it would be good on sushi rice too!

This was a really great tin of plain mackerel, especially at this price point. The fillets were meaty with enough flakiness to easily fork apart into rice, bread or whatever else you want to use it on. Seasoning was spot-on also.
