Luças Sardines in Olive Oil with Tomato

$8.50

One of the legendary brands from Portugal, this cannery was established in 1896 and remains one of the prime reasons why Portuguese sardines are the standard against which all others are judged. We love to gently mash these in the tin, then spread onto garlic toast.

Hmm. Have to admit, these were a little underwhelming. Thin tomato sauce that was a little underseasoned (for my taste) and also somewhat … metallic, maybe? I’m not sure how to best describe the flavor other than just perhaps “not my preference.” The sardine texture was medium and slightly on the drier side but that’s generally the case with a tomato’d tin. Difficult to justify this tin at this price if you’ve had Pinhaus/Nuri tomato sardine tins and consider them to be the peak of the genre (as I do). For me, I think there’s a much better experience to be had with the other Lucas sardine varieties.

I was initially hesitant to buy these sardines for two reasons. First, the lack of reviews, and second, my previous disappointing experience with sardines tinned in tomato sauce. A tin from another brand I’d picked up at my local grocery store had a sauce that tasted metallic and overly acidic. However, the price of this tin from Luças was tempting, so I decided to give tomato-tinned sardines another chance.

I opened the tin to find three large, firm sardines with no scales. They held together nicely when removed. I will admit that they were a bit on the drier side, but their meaty texture was satisfying, and the dryness wasn’t excessive. The flavor was mild, without any strong fishiness. The tomato and olive oil sauce was the perfect consistency. I would describe it as umami. There was none of that offputting acidic taste that I had experienced the first time I tried tomato-packed sardines.

I enjoyed these over a bed of rice, but they’d also do well with pan-fried potatoes.
