5 fish in this tin. Pleasant aroma, not at all fishy. The fish were firm, meaty and quite sweet. I had hoped-for a more anise flavor. Still , for my taste, very good. This might be a good tin for first time sardine experience. I will purchase again.

Easily in my top 3 tins.
And maybe my new favorite.
For context, I am a big fan of Ferrigno sardines and I’m a fennel fanatic and these exceeded my expectations.
The sardines are meaty, tender, and plentiful (with 5 in a tin). Plus, there is a nice amount of an almost jammy, pickly fennel which compliments the mild fishiness of the sardines nicely. Will be reordering more soon 🙂

Very pretty tin, I’m a huge fan of the design being on the bottom (for collecting) and a clever pun for a name. The tin was easy to open, and decently well packed with sardines, oil, and Fennel. However, upon trying to eat it (i had it over rice) I found the flavor to be quite lacking. It left the familiar very light numbing effect of Anise/Fennel. But, not much flavor overall. I couldn’t detect any Anise notes, and I found it just sat in my stomach a little weird. They also seemed to have an odd sweetness to them, and even the pieces of Fennel weren’t punching much. A squeeze of lemon and a pinch of salt helped lightly but, not sure I’ll buy this one again sadly. 4/10

Not what I was expecting, but thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless. The sardines themselves were firm and nicely proportioned. The fennel and anise was surprisingly subtle, with a sweeter perhaps more “rounded” flavor than I anticipated. Ate the sardines out of the tin and the remaining fennel and oil over toasted sourdough.
I was hoping for something with a more pointed anise flavor, however I suspect the actual product is more enjoyable than a tin of absinthe flavored fish.

Very interesting and unique. Sweeter than expected, almost reads as a carmelized onion add-in because of it. But unlike Ferrigno’s au Pastis tin, you do actually get the anise scent and flavor as advertised! It’s not overpowering by any means but it’s noticeable, pleasant. The sardines are typical Ferrigno medium-firm texture, average moisture and the seasoning/flavors are there without needing any extra help. I ate it straight from the tin but think it’d probably be best on some toasted bread, as they really put a ton of fennel in here and you won’t want to waste it. It might not be a tin I’ll order regularly because it’s a little … out there … but I’d happily order this again on occasion, to remind me of the quirky & delicious surprises that Ferrigno puts out there.
